The purpose of the Athens AI initiative is to break the vicious circle of learned helplessness in modern Athens by adding an unbiased layer of urban intelligence to the city and increasing the speed of governance.
Growing up between Psychiko and central Athens, steps from the National Archaeological Museum on Marni Street, where my family ran a pharmacy, I have been observing the same problems in central Athens since my childhood, and I truly cannot fathom why they remain unresolved. Drugs and petty crime in the same streets, lack of cleanliness, neglected infrastructure, lighting problems. A general lack of care for the city.
"That would never happen in Greece," we all tell ourselves. Sometimes we even laugh about it. Yet, in the long run, this chronic crisis affecting the standard of living of Athenians fosters a negative mindset, a sense of learned helplessness, and unfortunately a depressed face among many of us who live or work in the city center.
Athens AI was born from that frustration. The time has come to try: to systematically document these chronic problems and find solutions based on best practices from successful cities, global data and modern research.
The effort has begun. Athens deserves better.
